Question on iodine clock pre-lab assignment, please explain and do question 2 and 3(all of it). Thank you!
In the hypothetical reaction X(aq) + Y(aq) rightarrow P(aq) it is found that the time required to produce a constant small amount of product, P, varies as shown below. What is the order of X and Y? What is the overall order? Suppose that the small constant amount of product described in the preceding question corresponds to [P] = 1.0 times 10^-4 M. a. What is the average initial rate for each of the above runs? b. What is the average rate constant k for this reaction? (Be sure to include units for k.)Explanation / Answer
Q2.
we must find the order, therefore, use initial rate method
maintain constant X, so choose experiment 1 and 2
X is constant and Y is doubled from 0.1 to 0.2
the rate then --> 50/12 = 4.16
ln(4.16)/ln(2) = 2.05; therefore 2nd rate with respect to [Y]
then, choose run 1 and 3
so [Y] is constant
and [X] is only changed
similarly
x is doubled from 0.1 to 0.2, 2x
the rate : --> 50/26 = 1.92
ln(1.92)/ln(2) / = 0.94
nearet number is 1
therefore, it is 1st order with respect to X
the best order is:
Rate = k*[X]^1[Y]^2
the overall order = x+ y = 1+2 = 3
this isthird order with respet to overall rate
