Question
8) Draw McCabe-Thiele diagrams with the operating and the equilibrium lines for the following three equilibrium stage processes. You can assume both lines are straight. Show the direction of solute transport for each case and show how the number of ideal stages are determined. a Gas absorption b) Distillation c) Leaching d You intend to determine the number of ideal stages in a counter-current cascade of stages. You will use the McCabe-Thiele graphical method and the Kremser equation. Under what specific conditions or assumptions can each of these methods be used?Explanation / Answer
e)When we are analyzing a separating system involving counter current stages in a cascade, to define an ideal stage of that cascade, the required condition is that the immiscible phases are in efficient contact so that the leaving streams are in equilibrium.
d) The McCabe- Thiele diagram can only be used when the operating line is assumed to be staight or is straight(which is an ideal condition)
To use the Kremser equation in a Mccabe-Thiele diagram we should assume that onstantliquid flow/vapour flow is constant, should be a isothermal, isobaric system with negligible heat of absorption.
