Question
A student collected the following temperature-solubility data for ammonium chloride (NH4CI) dissolved in water by observing the temperature at which NH4Cl crystals first appear in the solution. Mass of water used to dissolved each NH4CI sample: 5.0 g a) Calculate the solubility of NH*CI. in grams of NH4CI per 100 g of water, for each saturation temperature. Enter these solubilites on the data table above b) Prepare a Solubility-temperature curve for NH4CI using a computer program and determine the solubility of NH4CI at 40 degree C. Briefly describe the hazard you should avoid when stoning a solution in a test tube suspended in a hot-water bath.Explanation / Answer
4. From the given data
a)
Solubility at 87.8 oC = 3.5 g x 100/5.0 g = 70 g NH4Cl/100 g H2O
Solubility at 67.8 oC = 3.0 g x 100/5.0 g = 60 g NH4Cl/100 g H2O
Solubility at 46.8 oC = 2.5 g x 100/5.0 g = 50 g NH4Cl/100 g H2O
Solubility at 25.8 oC = 2.0 g x 100/5.0 g = 40 g NH4Cl/100 g H2O
b) Solubility at 40 oC
= 50 x 40/46.8
= 42.74 g NH4Cl/100 g H2O
5. when stirring a hot solution, we should stir it slowly so that the liquid does not spill out of the container in which it is placed. The entire procedure must be carried out in a well ventillated fume hood.
