Question
The question that I want you to answer is attached in the picture. It is consisted of 4 parts. First part (a) is to compute the heat of reaction (schedule (or table) on the top right is needed for this part). second part (b) is to predict correctly if wither the increasing in temperture with cause more FE2O3 to dislove (juistification needed). Third part (c) is to provide an explanation (or reasoning) that make catalysts in general cause the reaction rate to increase. Last part (d) is to provide (or descripe) two possible changes you cold apply on the system that would decrease the amount of product formed in this reaction (besides changing temperture). I want the question answered for each part that is shown in the picture with steps (if required) and explanation. (reading the question's parts in the picture is needed critically).
Consider the dissolution of rust (Fe_2O_3). Fe_2O_3 (s) + 3 H_2O(l) 2 Fe^3+ (aq) + 6OH^- (aq) Compute the heat of reaction given the tabulated heats of formation at right. If the temperature is increased, will this cause more Fe_2O_3 to dissolve? Justify your answer. The dissolution of Fe_2O_3 is a slow process that is greatly accelerated via the presence of Cl^- as a catalyst. Explain why catalysts in general cause the reaction rate to increase. Describe two changes you could carry out on the system that would decrease the amount of product formed in this reaction, besides changing the temperature of the mixture.Explanation / Answer
a) Given reaction is Fe2O3 (s) + 3H2O (l) <------> 2Fe3+ (aq) + 6 OH- (aq)
Heat of reaction Hrxn = Hof of products - Hof of reactants
= 2x Hof Fe3+ (aq) + 6 x Hof OH-(aq) - [ Hof Fe2O3 (s) + 3 x Hof H2O (l) ]
= [2x -49] + [6 x -230] - [ -824 + (3 x-286) ]
= + 204 kJ/mol
Therefore, Heat of reaction = + 204 kJ/mol
Since heat of reaction is positive, the reaction is Endothermic.
b) Acc to LeChatlier's principle, Endothermic reaction favors the increase of temperature.
Therefore,
If temperature is increased, more Fe2O3 disssolved.
c) Catalysts lowers the activation energy of the reaction , thereby increases the rate of reaction.
d) To decrease the amount of product formed,
- Remove the reactants from the raection
- add more products to the reaction
