Question

What types of compound are produced when glucose is broken down? What are the two things that the glucose test is looking for?

o If all four bacteria were able to metabolize glucose, explain why all four were not able to metabolize lactose and sucrose. Consider the different chemical structure of each carbohydrate and what the bacteria would need to metabolize each carbohydrate. - Think about what organisms use to break down sugars. eg, you've probably heard of people with lactose intolerance. What are they lacking that they cannot digest lactose?

The four bacterias were, Gas from Glucose, Acid from Glucose, Sucrose, and Lactose.

Explanation / Answer

carbohydrates are metabolized differently as they fermentation of carbohydrate is very different . they produce gases ,pyruvic acid ,

lactose intolerance ; it is the inability digest lactose as they lack enzyme lactase .

gut bacteria are used to digest the sugars , they may ferment or simply breakdown . if they breakdown aerobically they produce acid such as pyruvic acid . if they digest anerobically called gases .

the glucose test is seen whether they produc ethe gas carbondioxide or production of pyruvic acid . the TSI test is done for the ability of digestion of sugars by the organisms it allows only glucose after depletion it will allow lactose , then sucrose to me metabolized .

some bacteria may lack the enzyme which digest lactose or sucrose . it is called lactose or sucrose intolerant ,so they will digest only glucose
