Understanding of the electrical double layer is vital for understanding the electron transfer that takes place in the half cells of an electrochemical cell.

Any molecule, when placed in a solution, develops a double layer of charge around itself. The charge is of opposite nature for the two layers, and there is a small separation between these layers. This causes an electric field to exist in that empty space, and this electric field plays a very vital role in governing many physical and chemical processes.

In an electrochemical cell, when an electrode is place in its half cell solution, this electric field double layer influences the rate of electron transfer between the solution and electrode. This ultimately effects the voltage output from that cell.
