Question

Why would trying to collect the 1H NMR and 31P NMR of the following two compounds be futile? Spectra of both show no useful information. I'm leaning towards perhaps an explanation related to symmetry. (These are known compounds, this is not research). I'm interested in hearing your thoughts!

Mn(Ph3PO)2Cl2 and Mn(Ph3PO)2Br2

I believe both compounds coordinate tetrahedrally. So, the positioning of the ligands is irrelevant, because no matter how they are arranged the two large ligands are adjacent and two chlorine ligands wil be adjacent. I also believe both compounds aren't very soluble in common NMR solvents, which could be an explanation if you can think of no other. I do not favor this answer, but I acknowledge the possibility.

Explanation / Answer

Mn(Ph3PO)2Cl2 and Mn(Ph3PO)2Br2

Both copunds have Mn2+ with elctronic confirguation 3d5 4s2. The compounds have five unpaired elctrons in d-orbitals that means compounds are paragametic nature. NMR of such compounds gives only very broad peaks and data will be not useful.
