Question

Application 40. Describe each of the following spectra as either line or continuous and explain your reasoning. (Used with permission of B. Niece.) 41. Laser has great stability and intensity but what about range? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using lasers? 42. A common way to determine the amount of chlorine residual in drinking water or swimming pools or spas involves observing the product of the reaction of aqueous chlorine with N,N-diethyl phenylenediamine reagent. Here's the absorption spectrum of that product: wavelength (nm Determine what coloris) of light this sample absorbs. What is the color of the solution? 43. Notice from the UV-Vis spectrophotomete r diagram in Figure 1 that the amount of light at the detector is significantly less than the source output. Would a more intense source be advantageous? Hint: think about signal-to-noise and explain your answer. 44. Some instruments actually employ more tha n one source. If you wanted to design an instrument that was what sources would you choose? Justify capable of operation from 200 nm to 900 nm your selection

Explanation / Answer

In the case of 1, both of your spectra can be considered as line spectra.

The first one is considering various peaks, but it is still just a set of lines that represent the spectra when helium is analyzed.

As for the second one, the continuous spectrum to which it would belong would consider a variety of colors. This spectra could have been obtained by the isolation of a peak from the continuous spectrum of led colors, but it is still a line one.
