Lab day/timet Expt 10 Prelab Assignment Reading Assignment: DUE: Week 10 at the beginning of the lab periodl . . Lab Packet Expt 10 Spectroscopy and Measuring the Concentration of an Unknown Solution Chemistry Laboratory Handbook Chapter 9 Visible Spectrometers pp. 65-69 Youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watchpxC6F7bK8cu in one or two sentences explain how you would define "spectroscopy" to your friend who is an English major. 10 a 10b What is the name of the equation that relates Absorbance and concentration? 10c Write out the equation from 10b. Define all the terms/abbreviations. 10 d White light from the lights in the lab shines on a solution of allura red and sugar (tropical punch kool-aid). You see it as a bright red solution. What happened to the other wavelengths of light (why do we only see red)? 10 e The maximum absorbance of a solution is found to be 610 nm. What color is the solution? 10f In spectrocopy, define the following terms Absorbance Transmittance:

Explanation / Answer

(a)

Spectroscopy is an analytical technique which is used to determine the quantity of any unknown element in a solution, using the principle of light absorption. More the amount of light absorbed, more is the quantity of that unknown element present.

(b)

The equation relating Absorbance to Concentration is termed as the Beer Lambert's equation.

(c)

This equation is as shown below:

A = e*l*C

Here,

A = Absorbance

e = molar absorptivity of the solute

l = length of the cuvette

C = Conc of the sample

(d)

The solution appears red because it emits the red wavelength while it absorbs all the other wavelengths present in the white light.

Hope this helps !
