1576 1544 W-1S-V Review for CA 24 and 25 1. Order the following by increasing meting pointss Co 11-14- - -o82-3.as-3/bl 0.32-2.s K F What is the formula of the com Al and O 2. ormed between the following elements? Mg and 1-1 Fr and S Ra and N 2 2 3. Given that ionic compound have much higher melting points than covalent compounds, what does this imply about the strength of ionic bonds? Thse tensthos steny Yare hae th head 4. Arrange the following by increasing melting points. Explain your arrangement. 5. Which of the following is likely to conduct electricity in its solid state? F2 NO Zn NaCI Co co2 Mgo Pb 6. In your own words, describe what a metallic bond is.

Explanation / Answer

Question-1

if the chemical bonds present are more strong then the melting point as well as boiling point will be high. Generally ionic bonds are more stronger than covalent bonds. KF and CaF are the ionic bonds forms from electro positive and electro negative atoms. K or potassium is more electro positive than calcium. Like fluorine is more electro negative than Sulphur. So the bond between K and F will be more stronger than Ca. As the size and radii increases melting point will decrease, it will be more easier to break the bond. So the increasing order will be

CaS > CaF >K2S > KF

Question-2

Al and O

Valency of Al= 3+ and for O = 2-

So the chemical formula will be Al2O3 ( just interchange the oxidation states as subscripts to the atomic symbol, Divide the superscript numbers If there is common factor exist)

Mg and I

Valency of Mg= 2+ and I = -1

Chemical formula MgI2

Fr and S

Fr +1 and S is 2-

then Fr2S

Ra and N

Ra +2 and N-3

Therefore R3N2

Question-3

Ionic compounds are more stable and stronger than Covalent bond.

Question-4

Cl2 > Na2O > NaCl > HI> H2O

cl2 is covalent single bond, The presence of intermolecular Hydrogen bonds make water more stronger with high melting point . Others are ionic bonds.

Question-5

Generally ionic bonds will conduct electricity in solid state, because they formed from ions (cations and anions) by transferring electrons. Here ionic bonds are NaCl and MgO

NaCl -------- Na+ + Cl-

MgO ---------- Mg2+ + O2-

Question-6

Metal character – obtained when electrons donating. A metal atom becomes positively charged ion by donating an electron. Metallic bond is the sharing of free electrons among a lattice of positively charged ions (cations)
