Question

18. When is an atom unlikely to react and form chemical bonds? 19. What is the order of the types of nuclear radiation from lowest to highest energy? 20. Which statement is false? Rewrite it so that it is true a Fusion involves the combination of two smaller atoms into a larger atom b. Fission involves the splitting of an atom into smaller atoms c Fission and fusion are two processes that release very little amounts of energy 21. What naturally occurring radioisotope is used as the fuel for a nuclear reactor? is a binary ionic compound. From its formula, Mgo, how do you know that Mg is the metal? 23 On the periodic table, there are two numbers in the block for the element potassium, K: 19 and 9098 What are the names of the numbers and what do they measure?

Explanation / Answer

18.an atom is unlikely to form Chemical bonds when it is stable with respect to its electronic configuration...or in other words we can say the valence shell is completely full....in that case it will never try to gain or loose electrons which may disturb its stability...

19.there are 3 types of nuclear radiation that is , alpha , beta and gamma radiation..The order of their energies :(gamma >Beta > alpha)....

gamma has no mass and no charge which makes it very dangerous as it is very light and hardly deviates from its path damaging a lot...Alpha is the least hazardous as it has 2 protons and 2 neutrons bounded together inside nucleus..

20. third is false as large amount of energy is released during fusion or fission....these energy are used in various reactors to rum large number of devices....

22.Clearly Mg has electronc configuration as (2 , 8 , 2) which means to complete its octet it has to either gain 6 electrons from outside and then its configuration becomes (2,8,8) or loose 2 valence electrons and then its configuration becomes (2,8)....but gaining 6 electrons is quite complex rather than to loose 2 electrons ,,, hence it looses 2 electrons ....hence it is a metal and these ekectrons when gained by oxygen we get MgO....

21.Uranium - 235 is used as fuel in nuclear reactors as in certain conditions it splits up and yield lot of energy ....when a fast moving neutron attacks U-235 it produces U-236 which further split up to form Kr-92 and Ba-141....

23. 19 means atomic no. of K which is denoted by Z...it measures total no. of electrons or no. of protons in tha atom of K....while 39 means atomic mass which is denoted by A....it measures total no. of protoms and total no. of neutron inside K atom..
