Question
Heme molecules are responsible for the red pigmentation of blood cells. Differing chemically isolated molecular heme compounds are named as "Heme X" (where "X" is a variable denoting the actual molecular fragments which are represented by the labels R3, R8, and R18).A) Suppose one molecule of Heme X contains 4 oxygen atoms, and Heme X is 9.82 % oxygen by weight. Using only this information and the atomic mass of oxygen, determine the molecular mass of Heme X.
B) The Heme X molecule contains one chlorine atom. What mass of chlorine is found in 5.43 g of Heme X compound?

What mass of chlorine is found in 5.43 g of Heme X compound?
Explanation / Answer
a) Let the molecular mass of Heme X be y
Mass of 4 oxygen atoms = 16 amu * 4 = 64 amu
Mass percent of oxygen = 9.82%
So the equation will be
9.82/100 * y = 64
y = 651.73 amu
Hence the molecular mass of Heme X is equal to 651.73 amu
b)
Number of moles of Heme X = Mass/molar mass = 5.43/651.73 = 0.00833165 moles
Mass of chlorine in the compound = mass of one mole of chorine * number of moles of Cl
=> 35.5g/mol * 0.00833165 mol
=> 0.29577 grams
