QUESTION #3Enamored of plants after studying GeneralBiology (Plant Major) , you find work with a conservationorganization at a plant preserve in the San Juan Islands. You beginwork on some basic ecology studies to better understand the lifehistory of a rare orchid species found only on the edges offreshwater ponds scattered throughout the preserve. You have beenasked to try to determine whether the plant is limited to itscurrent locations because of its inability to disperse beyond thepond edges, and / or because the plant can only survive inwaterlogged soils. Describe two experiments, one for each factor, which may shed light on whether these factors are influencing thelimited distribution of the orchid at thepreserve. QUESTION #3

Explanation / Answer
So you want one experiment for testing the water logged soil theoryand one for dispersal. For water logged soil, a very simple experiment could be set upwhere you would attempt to grow the plants in soil with differentlevels of water. They would range from water logged(as acontrol) to fairly dry. To test dispersal, you would place a number of plants in a group ina test field and watch their reproductive behavior over time. If the plants tend to spread from their original location, then youknow that the plants are not limited by dispersal.
