Question
Copper has been used for thousands of years, either as a pure metal or in alloys. It is frequently used today in the production of wires and cables. Copper can be obtained through smelting or recycling. Determine the energy associated with each of these processes in order to recycle 1.07 mol Cu. The smelting of copper occurs by the balanced chemical equation: CuO(s) + CO(g) Cu(s) + CO2(g) where H1c o is =-155 kJmol. Assume the process of recycling copper is simplified to just the melting of the solid Cu starting at 25. The melting point of Cu is 1084.5°C with H.-13.0 kJ/mol and a molar heat capacity, cpCu # 24.5 J/mol°C v 6th attempt Part 1 (1point) Jd See Periodic Table See Hint Enthalpy change for the reaction recovering Cu from Cuo 53.76 k) 13:13 VIEW SOLUTIONs oF 13 QUESTIONS COMPLETED heee to searchExplanation / Answer
We have heat of reaction for copper refining = -155 kJ/mol
copper given is 1.07 mol
energy associated with this = -155 kJ/mol x 1.07 mol = 165.85 kJ
Now to seperate or recycle Cu , we need to melt it to seperate from CuO
Now the product is at 25 oC given in problem and for recycling ,we just need to heat it till its melting point
= 1084.5 oC
Total heat involved = heating of Cu from 25 oC to 1084.5 oC and then melting heat
heating of Cu from 25 oC to 1084.5 oC = nCpT = 1.07 mol x 24.5 J/mol.oC x (1084.5 oC - 25 oC) = 27774.80 J
~ 27.78 kJ
heat required for metling = 1.07 mol x 13.0 kJ/mol = 13.91 kJ
total heat = 13.91kJ + 27.78 kJ = 41.69 kJ
