Questions: 1. Aldol condensations are equilibrium reactions and Le Chatelier's principle applies to the positi m. Based on Le Chatelier's principle how would you of the equilibrium. Based on Le Chatelier's principle how would you increase the yield of the reaction you performed in this lab? (1 pt) 2. Provide the starting material needed to prepare the following compound. (1 pt) CH3CH2CH-C-C-H CH3 3. Indicate the carbon that will appear with the highest value of chemical shift (ppm) in the 13C OCH3 ÖCH3 ÖCH3 NMR spectrum. (1 pt)Explanation / Answer
1) The aldol reaction is reversible . it can be done in either acidic or basic medium.
To shift the equivilibrium towards product side usually a less soluble base like Ba(OH)2 is used and the product is separated by filtration from the insoluble base.
However according to Le-Chatlier prinicple , if one of the products is removed continuously the equilibrium is shifted right side yilding the products.
In practice the formed aldol is instantly dehydrated from the reaction mixtrue itself by heating to give the alpha beta unsaturated carbonyl compound which is stable and can not be reversed back to the original carbonyl compounds.
This elimination of water follwoing the addition reaction is termed condensation and now the reaction is termed as aldol condensation.
Thus heating and elimination of water by which the product is removed turns the equilibrium right side according to Le-Chatlier principle.
2)the starting compound is CH3CH2CHO
The given aldol is the self condensation product of CH3CH2CHO
3) The carbonyl carbon is the one that is shown at the highest chemical shift value.
