Question

When removing the solvent from your product, it is stated that when the flask no longer felt cool. the evaporation process was complete. Why does the flask feel cool while evaporation occurs but not when evaporation is complete? 2pts . Triglycerides undergo saponification reactions to form glycerol and fatty acid salts. The reaction compounds have different solubility. Write H,O below structure(s) expected to be more soluble in water and DCM under those more soluble in dichloromethane .3 pts NaOH + 3 Fatty acid salt Triglyceride Deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen with symbol D. It exists as a diatomic gas D, and behaves like hydrogen gas. Taking into account the mechanism of hydrogenation add hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) to depict the chair conformer of the product formed from the reaction of cyclohexene with D, in the presence of Pd/C. 2 pts Today's reaction is an example of heterogeneous catalysis. 2 pts a. What is the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis? b. How would you classify the following catalytic processes? (circle) Catalytic converter in automotive exhaust system: Homogeneous or Heterogeneous Phosphoric acid in dehydration of 2-methylcyclohexanol: Homogeneous or Heterogeneous .

Explanation / Answer

Ans-4b. First will know what is catalytic converter. It changes posionous molecules in to non posionous molecules. For examples when carbon mono-oxide which is a gas reacts with nickel(catalyst) which is solid formed carbon dioxide. So here reactant was in gaseous form while catalyst was in solid form . So its a heterogeneous catalysis process.------------let us come to second one : when 2-methylcyclohexane deydrated in phosphoric acid it forms a product. But if we look at the reactant and the catalyst phosphoric acid both are the liquid . So this type is known as homogeneous catalysis

Ans-4a. Difference between heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis is very simple . First I will discuss about homogeneous catalysis- In this type of catalysis all the reactant and the catalyst are in the same phase. For eg : If you have two reactant and one catalyst and all the three things are in liquid phase , then it is a type of homogeneous catalysis. ---------Heterogeneous catalysis: In this type of catalyis reactants and the catalyst are in different phase, then it is a heterogeneous catalyst.

Ans-1. Evaporation process requires heat to raise the temperature and evaporates the solution. When it starts , it takes latent heat from the solution which is kept in a flask and hence ultimately flask becomes cool. But when the evaporation process completes, it does not require any heat from the solution , so the flask behaves as normal.
