Question

Discuss the germination responses of these all species in relation to the type of community in which they live; that is, what are the principal factors acting on germination in each community? (What type of community might these be?) Define whether the species have transient or persistent seed banks (which mean what)? How do the differences in germination characteristics within a community tell you anything about their ecological responses within the community? Because there is more than one "right" answer, defend your choices.

Explanation / Answer

According to the given data, there are two communities with six different species. Each species is peculiar and has different germination conditions.

According to the given data, the species 1, which is exposed to dark for 3 months and then refrigerated, is able to germinate nearly similar in both conditions. The control seeds are exposed to dark for three months and then germinated to produce plantlets. Few of the control seeds are exposed to different conditions like refrigeration, daily light, 1 hour heat, cold and light, cold and heat, or heat and light. In all these conditions, it is able to grow best in control, 3 months cold (refrigeration), daily light, or cold and light.

According to the given data, the species 2, the control seeds are exposed to dark for three months and then germinated to produce plantlets, where the seeds are unable to germinate. Few of the control seeds are exposed to different conditions like refrigeration, daily light, 1 hour heat, cold and light, cold and heat, or heat and light. In all these conditions, it is able to grow best in cold and light and least in 3 months cold (refrigeration) and daily light conditions.

In community 1, species 3 is able to grow best only in cold and light condition.

In community 2, species 4 is able to grow best in multiple conditions like control, refrigeration, daily light, or cold and light, while species 5 and 6 is able to grow in three conditions like 1 hour heat, cold and heat, or heat and light. The species 6 is growing best in all three conditions, while species 5 is growing best in cold and heat when compared to 1 hour heat or heat and light.

Thus, the principle factors that are affecting the seed germination are light, heat, and cold.

The species 1 is persistent, which is able to adjust in different conditions and growing best. Similarly, species 4 in community 2 is able to grow best in different conditions. In contrast, species 3 has transient seeds, which are able to grow only in suitable conditions.

Except species 5 and 6 no other seed is able to tolerate the heat for 1 hour. Thus, species 5 and 6 can grow in hot climatic conditions.
