Question
What is the value of G when [Ag] = [Cu] = 1.0 M?
I found the values for Ecell already:
Ag+/Ag = 0.799
Cu2+/Cu = 0.340
(Can you do a step-by-step solution, and also explain what you used to determine the answer and why you used it to determine the answer? I am unsure about this topic and I need a little more clarity on how to do these problems.)
25,what is the value for 4G" when [Ag+]-[Cu2+]-1.0 M? Eo for Ag /Ag and CuCu are given in questions 19 & 24. (A) -44.4 kJ (B) -88.8 kJ (C) -243 kJ (D) 374 kExplanation / Answer
Eo cell = Eo ( Ag+/Ag) - Eo ( Cu2+/Cu)
= 0.799-0.340 = 0.459
we have reaction 2Ag+ (aq) + Cu (s) ----> 2Ag (s) + Cu2+ (aq)
we use Nernest equation to calculate Ecell
E cell = Eo cell - ( 0.059/ n) log Q
where n = number of electrons involved per reaction = 2
Q cell ( reaction coefficient) = [Cu2+] / [Ag+]^2 = 1M / 1M^2 = 1 ,
Ecell = 0.459 - ( 0.059/2) log (1)
= 0.459
now we have relation dG = - nFEcell where F = faraday constant = 96485 C
= - 2 x 96485 x 0.459 = -88570 J = -88.6 KJ
Hence answer is option B
