Water is one of the few substances on earth that increases involume when it changes from the liquid state to the solid state. What happens to the density of water during this change? Explainthe impact of this physical property on life on earth. List someother substances that also have this property. Can you please explain in a way that I can understand. Thanksfor your help.... Explanation / Answer

The normal pattern for most compounds is that as the temperatureof the liquid increases, the density decreases as the moleculesspread out from each other. As the temperature decreases, thedensity increases as the molecules become more closely packed. Thispattern does not hold true for ice as the exact oppositeoccurs.

In liquid water each molecule is hydrogen bonded toapproximately 3.4 other water molecules. In ice each each moleculeis hydrogen bonded to 4 other molecules.
