Question
First, I need to know what I can do to be able to ask more than the 20 questions per month. I am willing to pay more if I have to. Second, I need to get help on proper citation. Is there someone that I can email citation expecations so they can check and go over my citations becauase I get no credit if the citation is incorrect.
Here is the question: Name the structural components common to viruses and describe teh function of each. Describe at least three structural cahracteristics that contribute to the high diversity in types of animal viruses and give examples to illustrate the differences. NO credit if a complete and proper citation is not provided.
Can someone remove my school name from my questions?
Explanation / Answer
Normally viruses are categorized into two groups depending on their structural components as 1) Non-enveloped virus and 2) enveloped virus
Non-enveloped viruses have protein/proteins and nucleic acids as their structural components whereas enveloped virus have capsid surrounded by lipid layers. The virus capsid is a hollow symmetrical protein oligomer or polymer inside which viral genome - nucleic acid (most of times RNA/DNA) is present.
Structural characteristics that contribute diversity in animal viruses:
Animal viruses exhibit the most structural diversity. This is observed in terms of their size, shape, presence or absence of envelop, capsid architecture, type of their genomic nucleic acid mechanisms of their life cycle and infectious cycle.
Examples:
Some of the animal viruses differ in their Genetic material
dsDNA - Herpes viruse, Adenovirus
ssDNA - Parvovirus
dsRNA - Reovirus
ssRNA (RT) - Retrovirus
ssRNA (+) Coronavirus
ssRNA (-) Paramyxovirus
Regarding citations, there are a number of books and web recourses available for information about viruses. I suggest that you should use the most updated information and recent books. Here I have referred the book " Structure and Physics of viruses" by Mauricio G. Mateu published in 2013.
