Question

An accident to the head can affect the ability of a person toventilate, and so can certain drugs. a. What would happen to the partial pressure of oxygen andcarbon dioxide in the blood if a person cannot properlyventilate? b. When a person with hypoventilation is placed on aventilator, an air mixture is delivered at pressures that arealternately above the air pressure in the person's lung, and thenbelow. How will this move oxygen gas into the lungs, and carbondioxide out? An accident to the head can affect the ability of a person toventilate, and so can certain drugs. a. How will this move oxygen gas into the lungs, and carbondioxide out?

Explanation / Answer

(a) When a person cannot properly ventilate or breath, he isunable to take in enough oxygen. So the level of carbon dioxide inthe blood increases. So the partial pressure of oxygen in the blooddecreases and that of carbon dioxide increases. (b)   When the air mixture is delivered atpressures higher than the lung pressure, the gases in the air rushin to the lung and in to the blood stream. When the pressure isreduced, the reverse happens and some of the air dissolved inthe blood comes out to the lungs and out of the lungs.    During the first process, oxygen is added tothe blood stream and during the second process, excess carbondioxide is given out by the blood and removed. So the ventilatorimitates the process of natural breathing in a person who is unableto breath by himself.
