Question

This question is from an old test that I took and I got itwrong. The answer is 1.038 m not 0.963m, butplease show me how to get to that answer. Thank you! What is the molality of a 1.00 molar solution ofsulfuric acid (molar mass 98.09 g/mol)? The solution has adensity of 2.061 g/ml. This question is from an old test that I took and I got itwrong. Explanation / Answer

We Know that :     Let us consider 1L of the given solution           Density = 1.061 gm/ml       Therefore, mass of solution = density x volume = 1.061 x 1000gms = 1061 gms       No. of moles of solute = 1 x 1 moles = 1 mol       Mass of solute = 1 x 98 gms = 98 gms    Mass of solvent (water) = 1061-98 = 963 gms = 0.963kgs       We have molality = no. of moles of solute / mass of solvent(in kgs) = 1/1.963 mols/kg = 1.038 m       therefore, the molality of the solution is 1.038 m           Density = 1.061 gm/ml       Therefore, mass of solution = density x volume = 1.061 x 1000gms = 1061 gms       No. of moles of solute = 1 x 1 moles = 1 mol       Mass of solute = 1 x 98 gms = 98 gms    Mass of solvent (water) = 1061-98 = 963 gms = 0.963kgs       We have molality = no. of moles of solute / mass of solvent(in kgs) = 1/1.963 mols/kg = 1.038 m       therefore, the molality of the solution is 1.038 m
