Question

Could someone please help me with this problem: 7 grams of CaSO4 are added to 1L of water. What is theequilibrium concentration of [SO4]2- ? I'm not sure if I'm supposed to use Ksp or if I'm supposed toassume that the concentration of CaSO4 is the same as theconcentration of [SO4]2-... Explanation / Answer

    Concentration means The number ofmoles of solute present in the 1L solution .     thenumber of moles = Weight / moleculerweight      weight of the solute is = 7grams     Moleculer weight of the copper sulphate=159.61 g     The number of moles of solute is = 7/136.14=0.0514 moles       Concentration C= 0.0514mols / 1L                                = 0.0514 M                 CaSO4 (aq)<---------> Ca2+ (aq)+SO42- (aq)     I(M)      0.44                              0.0              0.0     C(M)      -x                                +x                  +x    E(M)      0.44-x                            +x                 +x                             Ksp=x2                           9.1*10-6 =x2                               x=(9.1*10-6)                                  =0.003 M At equilibrium the concentration ofSO42- is 0.003 m                           9.1*10-6 =x2                               x=(9.1*10-6)                                  =0.003 M At equilibrium the concentration ofSO42- is 0.003 m   Here the concentration of CaSO4 is notequal to concentration of SO42- because the solubility product is very low .So   itcannot dissociate completely .
