Question
list the following substances in order of increasing normal boilingpoints and explain your reasoning. group 1: NO NH3 Ne RbCl group 2:SO2 He HF CaF2 Ar they are separated questions.i know that attractive force determines the boilingpoints the answer for the first one is Ne NO NH3 RbCl because it is nonpolar<polar<hydrogen bonded<ionicbond
can someone explain how is NO polar and RbCl ionic ? why is it not dipole dipole and solve group 2 Thanks group 2:SO2 He HF CaF2 Ar they are separated questions.

Explanation / Answer
Let me list some information you need to know before I answer yourquestion. Intermolecular forces are between different MOLECULES whileintramolecular forces are between different ATOMS. Intramolecular forces are significantly greater than intermolecularforces. Intermolecular forces are hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole, andlondon dispersion forces. Intramolecular forces are Ionic and Covalent Bonding. Ionic bonds are form through the transfer of elections (normallybetween metals and nonmetals) and have high boiling points. Covalent bonds are form through the sharing of elections (normallybetween nonmetals) polar is when there is unequal sharing of elections while non polaris equal sharing of elections Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to attract anelectron. Electronegativity increases as you go up and to the right of theperiodic table (excluding noble gasses which haveelectronegativities of 0). Fluoride has the highestelectronegativity. Answers: NO is polar becuase O is futher right in the period table than N,meaning that it has a higher electronegativity and that the sharedelectrons will spend more time near O. RbCl is ionic because the bond is between metal and nonmetal. Rb isan alkali Metal (Group 1) and Cl is a gas (Group 7) If it is nonpolar, The attractive force is London dispersionforce. If it is polar, the attractive force is dipole-dipole force. Therecan also be hydrogen bonding if it is polar (because is it also aform of dipole-dipole interaction). Highest BP--- RbCl, NH3, NO, Ne ---Lowest BP
