Question

The reaction between NO2 and CO to produce NO andCO2 is believed to occur via two steps shown below. Step 1: NO2 + NO2 NO + NO3
Step 2: NO3 + CO NO2 +CO2 The experimental rate law israte=k[NO2]2. (a) Enter the equation for the overallreaction. (Use the lowest possible coefficients. Omitstates-of-matter in your answer.) (b) Identify the intermediate.
Step 1: NO2 + NO2 NO + NO3
Step 2: NO3 + CO NO2 +CO2 (a) Enter the equation for the overallreaction. (Use the lowest possible coefficients. Omitstates-of-matter in your answer.)

Explanation / Answer

The overall reaction is obtained by adding the two step reactionsafter eliminating the intermediate b) Intermediate are those molecules that are on both side of thereaction. Whether one molecule is in the reactant side of the firststep and the same molecule is on the product of the second step. When you see this, you don't need to include those molecules inyour overall reaction. The member above me did a good job at writing the steps and overallreaction. Hope it helps.
