Question
Heat of reaction(Hrxn) = bond energy of products - bond energy of reacants
We have :
(i) In products
4 x 2O-H bonds , sum of their bond energy = 4 x 463 kJ/mol x 2mol = 3704 kJ
2 x CO bonds , sum of their bond energy = 2 x 1072 kJ/mol x 1mol = 2144 kJ
(ii) In reactants
2 x 4 C-H bonds , sum of their bond energy = 2 x 413kJ/mol x 4mol = 1652 kJ
3 x O=O bonds, sum of their bond energy = 3 x 495 kJ/mol x 1 mol = 1485 kJ
Heat of reaction(Hrxn) = 3704 kJ + 2144 kJ - {1652 kJ + 1485 kJ} = 2711 kJ
this is for 2 mol CH4
per mol = 2711 kJ / 2 mol = 1355.5 kJ/mol
Ans = 1.35 x 103 kJ/mol
