Question
An aqueous solution in the tube on the left is in equilibrium with pure water in the tube on the right. The membrane that separates the two solutions is only permeable to water. Which component (A or B) has the higher molecular weight? Neither A nor B dissociates.
EXPLAIN WHY!
An aqueous solution in the tube on the left is in equilibrium with pure water in the tube on the right. The membrane that separates the two solutions is only permeable to water. Which component (A or B) has the higher molecular weight? Neither A nor B dissociates HO HO 2 2 10 g A A. A ?, ? C. They have the 20 g B H2O H2O same weight. H2O permeable membrane H2O permeable membraneExplanation / Answer
Solution:
Pressure at bottom =p= Height*Density* acceleration due to gravity
So height of liquid, pressure and acceleration due to gravity in the left limb is the same in both cases. Hence density is the same in bth the cases. Now Density is proportional to the molecular weight , hence molecular weight of A and B are same.
Hence answer is C.
