Question

Can someone help me understand entropy

Entropy- is a thermodynamic quantity that is a measure of the dispersion of energy of the system among the different possible ways that system can contain that energy. Thereby, reducing its ability to do work
If a system entropy value gets smaller; one can argue its ability to do work decreases because number of micro states of the system decreases?
Compare to if a system entropy gets larger, one can argue it has a higher chance to dispense its energy to the surrounding compare to a system with a lower entropy value?
If you have more things to add, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you Can someone help me understand entropy

Explanation / Answer

In other words, entropy is a measure of randomness or disorder ness.

More entropy means more disorder ness, whereas less entropy means less disorder ness.

The one with less disorder ness has the arrangement of particles in a more ordered manner.

The one with more disorder ness has the arrangement of particles in a less ordered or random manner.

For example, a solid has the arrangement of particles in a more ordered manner (less entropy), whereas a gas has the arrangement of particles in a less ordered manner (more entropy), and a liquid has the arrangement of particles in between solid and gas.

Entropy: Solid < liquid < gas
