Question

6. Conversion of C to °F is defined as °C-5/9 (°F-32) a. Calculate in °C where °F is 20° higher than °C (F C+ 20) b. Calculate in °C where is 20° lower than°C (°F-°C-20) c. Calculate in °C where °F is twice of C (F 2.0 °C) d. °K is defined as K-273.4+ °C. Calculate in °C where °K is twice of °F e. Recent finding of water in Mars found that the freezing point of water there is 80°K lower than common freezing point on earth due to high concentration of salt. Calculate the freezing point of water there in both °C and °F. Use fraction for a, b and c.

Explanation / Answer

Part a

Relation between °F and °C

°C = (5/9) (°F - 32)....... Eq1

Given that

°F = °C + 20

Put the value of °F in eq1

°C = (5/9) [(°C + 20) - 32]

°C = (5/9) (°C - 12)

°C = (5/9) °C - 12*5/9

0.444 °C = - 6.666

°C = -15

Part b

Given that

°F = °C - 20

Put the value of °F in eq1

°C = (5/9) [(°C - 20) - 32]

°C = (5/9) (°C - 52)

°C = (5/9) °C - 52*5/9

0.444 °C = - 28.888

°C = -65

Part c

Given that

°F = 2.0 °C

Put the value of °F in eq1

°C = (5/9) [(2.0 °C) - 32]

°C = (5/9) (2.0 °C) - (32*5/9)

°C = 1.111 °C - 17.777

-0.111 °C = - 17.777

°C = 160

Part d

°K = 273.4 + °C

°K = 2.0 °F

2.0 °F = 273.4 + °C

°F = 136.7 + 0.5 °C

From eq1

°C = (5/9) [ (136.7 + 0.5 °C) - 32]

°C = (5/9) (104.7 + 0.5 °C)

°C = (5/9)*104.7 + (5/9)*0.5 °C

°C = 58.166 + 0.277 °C

0.723°C = 58.166

°C = 80.45
