Calculate the amount of heat in Kilojoules released when 50gof steam at 125 degrees C are converted to 50 grams of ice at-125degrees C. I can't find the formula for this practice question and unablecan't really think on how to approach it. I don't see it in thenotes. Any ideas? what you need are the heat capcity values and heat of fusionand of vaporiztion. To freeze water you must take awayenergy. Water stores energy depending on its state andteperature. When water is a gas it stores energy by thismuch. 2.080 kJ/kg*K. When it is a liquid it storesenergy by this amount 4.181 kJ/kg*K. And when it is ice isstores it by this amount 2.05 kJ/kg*K. Now when you getto the transition points it take energy to change states. Tochange from liquid to gas is 2257 kJ/kg. And for ice to water334 kJ/kg. All you need to do is to time the weight by theconstant by the temperture change to each state change and add theheat of vaporiztion and of fusion.25*.05*2.08=2.6 kJ 2257*.05=112.85 kJ .05*100*4.181=20.905 kJ .05*334=16.7 kJ 125*.05*2.05=12.8125 kJ Add 2.6+112.85+20.905+16.7+12.8125=165.867 kJ Which is your final answer.
