Question
2SO2(g) + O2(g) <==> 2SO3(g) The equilibrium cannot be establlished when __________ is/areplaced in a 1.0 L container (a) 1.0 mol SO3 (b) 0.50 mol O2 and 0.50 mol SO3 (c) 0.25 mol SO2 and 0.25mol SO3 (d) 0.75 mol SO2 (e) 0.25 mol SO2 and 0.25 mol O2 All in gas phase. Answer is (d), but how do I knowthis? Please explain the reasoning behind thisanswer 2SO2(g) + O2(g) <==> 2SO3(g) The equilibrium cannot be establlished when __________ is/areplaced in a 1.0 L container (a) 1.0 mol SO3 (b) 0.50 mol O2 and 0.50 mol SO3 (c) 0.25 mol SO2 and 0.25mol SO3 (d) 0.75 mol SO2 (e) 0.25 mol SO2 and 0.25 mol O2 All in gas phase. Answer is (d), but how do I knowthis? Please explain the reasoning behind thisanswerExplanation / Answer
Equilibirum: K = {[SO3]^2}/{[O2][SO2]^2} If you add 1 mol of SO2, it can't become SO3 or O2. You need to addall the reactants (SO2 and O2) so that someproduct can be formed in equilibrium. Or you add all the products (SO3 in part a) to form thereactants. d) will just stay as SO2 and you can't get reaction to obtainchemical equilibrium
