Question

8. You take a rock, tie it to the end of a string, and swing it in a circle above your head at the rate of 30 revolutions per minute. You then double the length of the string while continuing to rotate the rock at 30 revolutions per minute. a. When would the rock's rotational speed be the greatest? Explair. b. When would the rock's tangential speed be the greatest? Explain. c. When would the rock's rotational inertia be the greatest? Explain. d. When would the rock's centripetal acceleration be the greatest? Explain. e. When would the rock experience the greatest centripetal force? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

a) rotational speed (w) is same in both case . i.e 30 revolution per minute (given)

b) tangential speed = w* R where R is lenght of string . So in second case when length is double tangential speed will be greatest .

C) rotational inertia I = mR^2. So when length will be double rotational inertia will be greatest.

d) centripetal acceleration = (w)^2 . R so when R will be double centripetal acceleration will be maximum

e) centripetal force will be maximum when centripetal acceleration will be maximum so when R will be doubled rock will experience greatest centripetal force .
