Question
Answer the two questions below:
28.
Shelby and Reagan prepare a nitric acid solution to dissolve hair using digestion. Nitric acid oxidizes keratin in protein. They need 100mL of aqueous 0.3M HNO3 solution. They plan to add acid to water and add 16.0 M HNO3 to a quantity of water.
Reagan uses a 100mL volumetric flask to prepare solution. Flask is filled with DI part way and the acid is measured using a 10mL graduated cylinder. She fills it up to the mark with DI water.
Shelby on the other hand uses a 100mL graduated cylinder to measure 100mL of water, pours it into a beaker and adds the HNO3 from a 10mL graduated cylinder and stirs well.
a. how many milliliters of the concentrated HNO3 are needed to make 100mL of 0.3 M solution?
b. What advantages are there to using a volumetric flask to prepare the HNO3 solution?

a. how many milliliters of the concentrated HNO3 are needed to make 100mL of 0.3 M solution?
Using equation of dilution
M1 * V1 = M2 * V2
V1 = M2 * V2 / M1
M1 = 16.0 M
M2 = 0.3 M
V2 = 100 mL
V1 = 0.3 * 100 / 16 = 1.875 mL or 1.9 mL
---------------
b. What advantages are there to using a volumetric flask to prepare the HNO3 solution?
volumetric flask is very accurate and a 100 mL volumetric flask will measure exactly 100 mL volume (with very small error). Measuring cylinder is not that accurate. So major advantage of using volumetric flask over measuring cylinder is the higher accuracy of volume in case of volumetric flask.
