Question
stereochemistry and polarimetry
1. what would you expect to observe in terms of the angle of rotation if you were to double the concentration of a sample, but kept all other variables constant? what would you expect to observe in perms of the angle of rotation if you were to double the path length?
2. a scientist placed a racemic mixture of tartaric acid in a beaker and later found it was growing moldy. he filtered off the mold and found the solution now rotated the planeof polarized light. the mixture did not rotate the plane of polarized light before. how had the mold changed the solution to become optically active?
Explanation / Answer
1. angle of rotation will increase if you double the concentration of a sample.
If you double the path length, your angle of rotation will double.
2. Racemic mixture wont rotate the plane polarized light. But, two isomers are different in solubility. Since he observed mold in his solution, it means that one enantiomer is soluble in the solution and another anantiomer remains as a mold. Once he separated the two isomers, the solution rotate the plane polarized light, since it contain only one isomer.
