Question
The following refer to a hypothetical chemical reaction, 2 A -> C + 3 D
You are investigating the kinetics of this reaction in lab. Your lab partner, in charge of collecting data, is distracted by
videos of explosions on his smartphone and only collects two data points. At t = 25 seconds, [A] = 0.0260 M; and at t =
115 s, [A] = 0.0178 M. (A) Determine the rate of the reaction over this time frame. (B) At what rate is D being formed
over this time frame? (C) What type of rate have you found? Show this rate graphically, on a sketch of a hypothetical full
plot of [A] vs time.
Using those two data points and the integrated rate laws, determine what the rate constant for the reaction should be if
the reaction is (1) 1st
order, (2) 2nd
order, and (3) zero order in A.
Finally: You repeat the kinetics experiment, but now have too little time to finish your lab report and analyze all the
data. But, you remember learning about half lives in lecture. For this experiment, the initial [A] was 0.0300 M, and [A] =
0.0150 M at t = 165 seconds. Use this data, and the k values you calculated above, to determine order in A and the
reaction rate law. Show your work for zero, 1st, and 2nd
order. And, last thing: Calculate the instantaneous rate of the
reaction when [A] = 0.0260 M.
