Question

An LC system with a C18 stationary phase and a water/acetonitrile gradient is to be used to separate the following compounds.  What is the correct elution order for these compounds on this system?
biphenyl diphenyl ether nitrobenzene
An explanation would be great, thanks! An LC system with a C18 stationary phase and a water/acetonitrile gradient is to be used to separate the following compounds.  What is the correct elution order for these compounds on this system?

Explanation / Answer

nitrobenzene will be the most polar, then diphenyl ether will be intermediate polar in comparison, then last will be biphenyl,

Explantion:

since the presence of electron NO2 group will make the molecule to be polar because of large difference in the electronegative, so it will be eluted at the last.

then due to the presence of ether, it will also be polar, but in comparison less polar, it will be eluted before the nitrobenzene.

then biphenyl will be the least polar or non polar and will eluted as first.
