There have been attempts to encode and send messages into outer space in the hope that some extraterrestrial intelligence will find the messages, read and understand them, and know that the human race exists as well as something about us. The two most prominent attempts at this have been the Pioneer Plaque and the Voyager Golden Disc. The plaque was sent into space in 1972/3 with the Pioneer missions, and the disc was included on Voyager missions beginning in 1977. These have now left the Solar System and are on their way across the universe. The objectives of this assignment are twofold: Explain how you interpret the messages on the Pioneer Plaque and Voyager Golden Disk. Explain how you think they might be interpreted or misinterpreted by an alien intelligence and explain they you think that. Say what you feel to be the most useful piece of information conveyed by each of the two attempts, and explain why you feel that way. Construct a new message to be sent into space with the same purpose as previous efforts. Explain what kind of information you want to include, as well as how and why you have chosen to encode this information in the way you have in your design. Explain how your design overcomes any deficiencies in previous attempts and why yours is likely to be more successful.

Explanation / Answer

A)The messages on the Pioneer Plaque and Voyager Golden disc have been designed in pictorial forms. They are not very difficult to interpret by once as we have already been told the interpretation. But it can be difficult for the creatures on other part of the universe. Like we can decode the information about solar system because we already know that 9 planets were there. But other beings might find it difficult. However the most useful piece of information in Pioneer Plaque was earth's location relative to sun as it can tell about them about our location. In Voyager, it was images from nature as it can help them to understand the environment on earth.

B) The new message should have the picture of sunrise and sunset, different species so as to tell the diversity on Earth. Information about our Earth, its conditions like temperature and pressure, water cycles and other natural processes that are reaponsible for life here. By this way the other beings can understand and discover our planet and solar system easily. We have to also focus on the friendly symbol so that they dont get a message that we are hostile to anyone like we should not be showing anything made from animals etc. There should not be any information about our rule on other creatures on earth.
