Question
Read a newspaper this week and look for an article that includes a map that relates to something you are studying at briefly discuss the map in terms of the following: Citation - map title, author, publication name, date, page What are you majoring in? Given your discipline or area of interest why is this map of interest? Is the map primarily qualitative or quantitative? Explain. Describe the scale in terms of small or large scale. Can you tell what projection family is being used? Explain. What are the thematic map layer(s)? What are the reference map layer(s)? Describe one of the map layers used in terms of the feature type (point, line, polygon)Explanation / Answer
Map title-Annual temperature distribution around the world
CItation-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperature
Since my majoring subject is earth science. My area of interest is studying the temperature distribution of the world so that I can study about the global warming by comparing temperatures of the decade.
Qualitative maps are those which show the presence or absence of an object like vegetation whereas quantitative maps are those which show the actual distribution of data with information in numbers eg. elevation data, temperature data in degree celsius. The map here is quantitative map because it shows the actual distribution of data i.e. temperature in degree celsius in the world map
Small scale maps are those which show the large area with few details on them eg country map. The scale of the map is generally 1:100,000 whereas large maps are those which show a small area in great detail and the scale of the map 1:1000. Here the map used is a small scale map because its a world map showing just the broad geographical distribution of the countries.
The projection used is Robinson projection because in which the entire world can be seen simulataneously. In this projection neither scale nor area is preserved. This projection is not free of distortion anywhere especially at high latitudes where distortion is maximum
Thematic maps are those which are constructed for a specific purpose like population density, transportation routes etc. They use the base data like coastlines, boundaries, places for reference only. Here the map used is a thematic map which uses temperature data.
Reference layers are the geographical boundaries or places used in the thematic maps for the reference of the data. eg lakes, cities, highways etc.
Point are used to represent objects whose area is negligible eg electric poles, tube wells etc. Lines are defined by two points and used for the linear features eg. roads, pipelines. Areas are defined by closed set of lines and used for features like lakes, fields etc. In the map used the continental landmasses are the polygons
