Magma is a mixture of liquid rock,crystals,and gas.If magma makes it to the surface it will erupt and later crystallize to form extrusive rock.If it crystallises before it reaches the surface it forms igneous rocks.Rocks are a mixture of minerals so they melt at over a range of temperatures.Thus ,it is possible to have partial melts,from which the liquid portion is extracted to form magma.
Just as rocks,minerals also crystallise at different temperatures.Higher temperature minerals make the residual melt richer in silicon dioxide.Early formed crystals may be separated from the residual melta by different processes.
Olivine crystallises first.As the temperature drops, and assuming that some silica reamins in the magma,the olivine crystals react with some of the silica in the magma to form pyroxene.As long as tehre is silica remaining,the rate of cooling is slow and this process continuous down the discontinuous branch.
As the minerals tends to crystallise at different temperatures, the composition of residual melt continuously changes .
