Question

What are some of the elements involved in creating visual illusions? What role does culture play?

-      According Sigmund Freud’s unconscious wish fulfillment theory, dreams represent the unconscious wishes of the one dreaming. Do you agree or disagree? Have you ever learned anything meaningful from your dreams? Research the topic and cite 2 sources outside of the textbook to support your point of view.

-      Compare and contrast psychoactive and addictive drugs. Discuss some of the socially acceptable substances that people use on a regular basis that exhibit similar qualities in regard to psychological or physical addition. (For example, does your daily routine include a trip to Starbucks?)

If researchers learned how to control emotional responses so that targeted emotions could be caused or prevented, what ethical concerns might arise? Under what circumstances, if any, should such techniques be used?

Explanation / Answer

There are 7 elements of visual illusions, which are tone, texture, color, pattern, form, line and shape. Culture plays a very significant role as different cultures uses different geometry to depict visual, hence the interpretation of various elements varies with variation in culture.

A- I disagree with Freud's implication of dreams as unconscious wishes of the dreamer. I never have any meaningful dream till date. This may be exemplified by a simple example, most of us wishes to have a big fortune but how many of us ever have dreamt about being a multi milliner. Dreams may be anything but dreams can not be collectively called as un-conscious wishes.

R. W. McCarley and J. A. Hobson have sited that neurophysiological findings disapprove the theory of dreams as wish fulfillment.

Macmillan, 1991 identifies that Freud has made the revelation that most of his women patients mostly told him that they were seduced by their own father, however Macmillan, has maintained that this was only Freud’s inference only.

B. Psychoactive drugs which affect central nervous system bringing in temporary changes in behavior and perception are called psychoactive drugs.

Psychoactive substance which create dependency on such drugs and create permanent behavioral changes are called addictive drugs.

Tea, Coffee, Alcohol are the substances which are socially acceptable and are used by majority of people,

If targeted emotions can be caused, it will led to duplicity in behaviors of human being and thus it will create lot of duplicity in society in general and behavior of individual in particular. This is not at all recommended to be used by anyone since this will create a mask on the face which is very bad.
