Question
The standard state entropy of atom combination for any diatomic gaseous molecule is negative because the formation of a bond is an exothermic process. Explain your reasoning. Essay answers are limited to about 500 words (3800 characters maximum, including spaces). The entropy of atom combination for CH4(g) is expected to be more negative than the entropy of atom combination for NH3(g). Part B Explain your reasoning. Essay answers are limited to about 500 words (3800 characters maximum, including spaces).Explanation / Answer
True. Entropy of atom combination for CH4 is more negative than that of NH3.
One mole of CH4 is formed from 5 moles of its constituent atoms (one C and four H), however one mole of NH3 is formed from 4 moles of its constituent atoms (one N and three H). Therefore, in forming one mole of each gas, more ordering or less randomness is happened when CH4 is formed compared to NH3 is formed, and hence entropy of CH4 is expected to be more negative.
