Please show all work and use correct units and sig figs. I know 3 cant be fully awmsers but a predictive interpertation would be great. thanks.

Q1. If a cube of CaCO3 has an edge length of 1 cm, what is its volume? What is its surface

area?

Q2. If the cube in question 1 is pulverized into cubes each with an edge length of 0.05 cm,

what is the volume of one of those smaller cubes? What is the small cube's surface area?

How many small cubes could be obtained from the larger cube (assume that the volume

of the marble chip remains unchanged)? What is the total surface area of the smaller

cubes? How many times larger is this than the surface area of the large cube?

Q3. In Part 3 of the experiment, assuming that the reaction takes place on the surface of the

CaCO3, how many times larger must the surface area have been in Part b) compared to

Part a)? How does this compare to the answers you calculated in question 2?

Explanation / Answer

1) cube vol = a^3 = (1cm)^3 = 1cm^3

cube surface area = 6a^2 = 6(1cm)^2 = 6cm^2

2) a = 0.05 cm ,

smaller cube vol = ( 0.05cm)^3 = 1.25 x 10^-4 cm^3

smaller cube surface area = 6a^2 = 6(0.05cm)^2 = 0.015 cm^2

total small cubes = big cube volume / small cube vol = 1/1.25 x 10^-4 = 8000

total surface area of all small cubes = 8000 x 0.015 = 120 cm^2

number of times surface area of smaller cube is bigger than normal cube = 120/6 = 20 times

3) Part a , part b not given
