Question
Natural gas is a mixture of many substances, primarily CH4, C2H6, C3H8 and C4H10.
Assuming that the total pressure of the gases is 1.62atm and that their mole ratio is 94 : 4.0 : 1.5 : 0.50, calculate the partial pressure (in atmospheres) of each gas ?
Express your answer using two significant figures. Enter your answers numerically separated by commas.
Partial pressure of PCH4 in atm= ?
Partial Pressure of PC2H6 in atm = ?
Partial pressure of PC3H8 in atm = ?
Partial pressure of PC4H1 in atm = ?
Explanation / Answer
partial pressure of a gas in a mixture of gases = mole fraction of the gas*total pressure of the gas mixture
thus,mole fraction of CH4 = 94/(94+4+1.5+0.5) = 0.94
,mole fraction of C2H6 = 4/(94+4+1.5+0.5) = 0.04
,mole fraction of C3H8 = 1.5/(94+4+1.5+0.5) = 0.015
,mole fraction of C4H10 = 0.5/(94+4+1.5+0.5) = 0.005
thus partial pressure of CH4 = 0.94*1.62 = 1.5228 atm
partial pressure of C2H6 = 0.0648 atm
partial pressure of C3H8 = 0.0243 atm
partial pressure of C4H10 = 0.0081 atm
