Question

Your little cousin Johnny comes in from playing in Uncle Bill’s orchard, where the workers have been spraying pesticides. He is not feeling good at all. He is light-headed and dizzy, he’s drooling visibly on his shirt, and his pupils are constricted like pinpoints. When he has sudden and uncontrollable diarrhea, you rush him to the hospital. The doctor says that he got into a concentrated organophosphate pesticide, which you recall acts as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Use your knowledge of neurotransmitter systems to briefly explain Johnny’s symptoms. Also predict what you would find if you measured Johnny’s heart rate and blood pressure. Explain your answers.

Explanation / Answer

These inhibitors also used in many cases to traeat some diseases.

But in the above case johnny suffered with side effects of the inhibitor like hypotention, and also he suffers with GI track hypomotility and there is decrease in intraocular pressure. This leads to prolonged muscle contraction.
