Question
Calculate [DDT]fat in a 10g minnow if Kow = 106.2 and [DDT] water = 0.0034 ppm in the minnow's system. What is [DDT]fat in a 1 kg Northern Pike that eats 10 minnows a day (if DDT stays in fats for 6 years)? What is [DDT]fat for a bird that eats 10 pikes per day?
For the first answer I got 5.4 x 10-3 mg/ml, which I'm not really sure if that's correct. For the other two I'm wondering if I'm just supposed to keep multiplying that concentration I got or something else? And for 6 years?? I'm drawing a blank.
Explanation / Answer
Kow=[DDT]fat/[DDT] water=106.2
[DDT]fat=106.2 x 0.0034 ppm=0.36108ppm
[DDT]fat=3.618x10^-4 mg/ml
If a northern pike eats 10 minnows a day for 6 years,
[DDT]fat=3.618x10^-4 mg/mlx10/dayx6x365days=7.9234mg/ml
A bird eats 10 pikes per day =7.9234mg/mlx10=79.234mg/ml
