Question

I need help answering question #4 through #11! I would really appreciate it!

4. mass of water in the hydrate sample 5. moles of water in the sample 6. mass of anhydrous compound in the sample 7. The name of the anhydrous compound is copper II2nd time after Bunsen Burner sulfate. Write the chemical formula for copperI 2.2 ml mass of 93.000g 1st time after Bunsen Burner 0.9 mL 91.196g 0.9 mL 91.196g sulfate. (ie, water = H2O) 8. Determine the molar mass of the copper II sulfate compound. 9. Calculate moles of anhydrous compound in the sample 10. Calculate molar ratio of water to anhydrous compound in the sample 11. Using the results of your calculations, what is the empirical formula of the hydrate? Use the ratio results to determine the X (number of water molecules) and write formula as was done in the following example MgSO4 7H20

Explanation / Answer

7. The chemical formulae of Cu(II) cation is Cu2+

The chemical formulae of sulphate ion is SO42-

Hence the chemical formulae of copper(II) sulphate is CuSO4 (answer)

8. 1 mole of Copper(II) sulphate, CuSO4 contains 1 mole of Cu atom, 1 mole of S atom, and 4 moles of O atoms.

Hence molar mass of CuSO4 = 1*(atomic mass of Cu) + 1*(atomic mass of S) + 4*(atomic mass of O)

= 1*63.5g +32g +4*16 g = 159.5 g/mol
