Question
Below are several choices for your Discussion Question. You need to select ONE and be sure to provide a UNIQUE example. Follow the guidelines. Use proper grammar, complete sentences, cite your sources, include all references.
1. Modern science is responsible for many of the developments, technologies, and breakthroughs that we enjoy in our lives. Select a unique technology/breakthrough and describe the process used to develop the specific technology and the role that the scientific method played in the process.
2. Why is it important to distinguish between accuracy and precision? Provide examples (not used in class) of things that can be accurate but not precise, as well as things that are precise but not accurate. Explain why accuracy or precision are preferred for your example.
3. Provide an example of each type of phase change (not used in class). Provide a unique example and explanation of how humans utilized phase changes in modern technologies.
4. Explain the importance of categorizing matter into elements, compounds, and mixtures. Provide a unique, everyday example for each (element, compound, and mixture) and explain why it belongs in that category.
5. Explain the importance of scientists to use the SI system and maintain standards for SI measurements. Provide an example (not used in class) of an application of SI units and the outcome.
Explanation / Answer
Accuracy:
It is a deviation of the measured result from the real or true result. It is measured by the difference between the average of observed results and the true result.
Precision :
In general precision also called Repeatability means repeat the process again and again to get accuracy.
Example:
Doing an experiment in chemistry lab with five tests, the end results of the five tests for whatever is being tested are:
14.0 kg 13.5 kg 13.8 kg 13.3 kg 14.2 kg
The actual value which is found in a scientific data book is meant to be 16.0kg.
From the results, the average value is13.76 kg. This is not at all accurate since the actual value should be 16.0 kg. The results are precise still, since they do not differ from each other.
