Question
Allyl alcohol can be produced by the hydrolysis of allyl chloride. Together with the mainproduct, allyl alcohol, diallyl ether is produced as a byproduct. The conversion of allyl chlorideis typically 97% and the selectivity to alcohol is 90%, both on a molar basis. Assuming thatthere are no other significant side reactions, calculate masses of alcohol and ether produced, per1000 kg of allyl chloride fed to the reactor.
Make sure it is a molar basis for the conversion. I got 156 kg of ether produced. I don't think I did it correctly however.
Explanation / Answer
allyl chloride = 76.52 g/mol
allylalcohol = 58.08g/mol
allylether = 98.16g/mol
1000kg allylchloride = (1000g X 1000) / (76.52g/mol) = 13068.4788 M
conversion efficiency of allychloride is 90% = 13068.4788 X (97/100) = 12676.4244 M
out of this 90% is specifically the allyl alcohol = 12676.4244 X (90/100) = 11408.7820 M
that is = 11408.782 mol X ( 58.08 g/mol) = 662622 g = 662.622 kg
out of the converted aalylchloride 10% is allylether = 12676.4244 X (10/100) = 1267.6424 M
that is = 1267.6424 mol X (98.16 g/mol) = 124431g = 124.43 kg
