Question

8. Listed below is solubility vs. temperature data for an organic compound in water Temp. sol. in 10 mL water 0 .5g 20 40 60 80 0.30 g 0.65 g 1.10 g 1.70 g a) Using the data in the above table, graph the solubility of the compound vs. b) Suppose 0.1 g of this compound is mixed with 1.0 mL of water and heated to c) The solution prepared in (b) is cooled. At what temperature will crystals of the d) Suppose the cooling described in (c) were continued to 0° C. How many grams temperature. Connect the data points with a smooth curve 80° C. Would the entire compound dissolves? Explain. compound appear? of the compound would come out of solution?

Explanation / Answer

a )

Solubility of organic compound is increases by increasing temperature .

b )

     We have ,

                 at 80oc , solubility is 1.70 grams per 10 ml of water . So , 1 ml contains 0.17 gr .

Solubility of organic compound is 0.1 gram per 1 ml .So , entire 0.1 gr of compound is completly dissolved in 1 ml water .

c )

Solubility is mainly depends on temperature . If the temperature increases , intermolecular space increases between molecules in a water . Hence more solute can be dissolved in water .If the temperature decreases ; intermolecular space also decreases . Then the extra solute crystals out .

At 40oc crystals appeared in solution , because maximum solubility of compound at 40oc is 0.065 grams per 1 ml . But we have 0.1 gam per 1 ml .

d )

At 0oc maximum solubility of compound is 0.015 gram per 1 ml , but we have 0.1 gram per 1 ml .

There fore 0.67 grams compound crystals out from solution .
