Question
Need solvent help. In the plan to separate a mixture of 50% benzoin, 40% benzil, and 10% 1,4-dibromobenzene.
Can I get all three solids to disolve in hexane or 9:1 hexane:ether?
step 1) 1,4-diboromo benzene highly non polar which would be eluted first using 9:1 ratio of hexane:ether.
while illuting it confirm TLC that no more 1,4 dibormo benzene is left in the column.
What solvent do I use for my TLC plate?
step 2) increase the polarity by changing your solvent composition to gradual raise of the polarity hexane : acetone.
which illute the Benzil first and then the benzoin.
Explanation / Answer
Since all the three compounds are soluble in ether, they can be made soluble in a composition of 8:2
n-hexane : ether mixture
What solvent do I use for my TLC plate
the solvent used as mobile phase can be 9:1 n-hexane:ethyl Acetate
